November is: National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month

Some generous local businesses and landmarks are helping us raise awareness about Alzheimer's disease and related dementia, and we encourage you to show your support for their efforts by visiting and thanking them.

Three local landmarks are  joining our efforts to raise awareness. On November 15, the Horseshoe Falls in Niagara Falls glowed purple at 9:00 p.m. (for 15-minutes) and again at 10:00 p.m. and the Seneca Niagara Casino Hotel Tower featureed a purple lighting display from 9-11 p.m.; the Electric Tower in downtown Buffalo (535 Washington Street) was a purple beacon on the evening of November 18; and for TWO nights--November 22 & 23--the Peace Bridge will be illuminated in purple. The following bakeries will be selling various baked goods with purple frosting or a purple decoration:

On November 13, Buffalo-area Congressman BRIAN HIGGINS spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives urging better funding for the fight against this disease. And all month long at West Herr Toyota (of Orchard Park), General Manager Tom Fogarty is helping us raise awareness with a purple display in his showroom, which includes take-home informational materials.

You can do YOUR PART to help us raise awareness:  change your profile picture on Facebook to a purple ribbon; ask your friends or co-workers if they know the significance of purple; consider hosting a "Casual for a Cause" day at work--call our chapter at 1.800.272.3900 during regular business hours to speak with Lynn or Phil about how to do that; make a general donation to the Chapter to help us continue to provide outreach and resources, and to help fund research!

Hold your own fundraiser to benefit the Alzheimer's Association!

It is easy to raise money for a good cause through simple things like dress down days at your work or hold a party at your house and ask people to make a donation at the door. Sponsor a "Casual for a Cause" day at work--ask your employer if you can raise funds by allowing a dress down day at the office. Have a football party to "Tackle Alzheimer's." Sell football squares with the money going to charity. For other ideas on how you can get involved, visit If you do hold your own fundraising event, let us know. We may be able to give you some great tips to make it a success.

For more information on our events or sponsoring one of them, please call the chapter at 1.800.272.3900. Also, if you would like to or are in the process of planning your own fundraiser to benefit the Alzheimer's Association, contact us at 1.800.272.3900 to see how we may be able to assist you.
