Michael Carson is the chief marketing officer of the Alzheimer’s Association, leading strategic initiatives that drive the global conversation around Alzheimer’s disease and all other dementia. In his role, Carson oversees organizational platforms including worldwide medical science marketing, public policy marketing and events branding.
Carson leads the Association’s communications initiatives including publishing, branding, alz.org, social media, global media relations, celebrity engagement, advertising and internal communications.
Under Carson’s leadership, the Association has grown concern about Alzheimer’s disease and awareness of the organization and its programs and services. Reach among the public has increased 54% and visits to alz.org have increased by 48%. Carson’s forward-thinking approach to social media has heightened concern, increased revenue, reduced stigma and earned the Association seven Shorty Awards.
To foster this growth, Carson leads platforms such as the annual Alzheimer’s Association Facts and Figures special report and the development of nationwide brand campaigns, including the “First Survivor” campaign, “United” campaign and a multi-year partnership with the Ad Council launching the “Our Stories” early detection campaign. These multilingual and multichannel efforts have substantially raised awareness of the cause, and reflect the Association’s dedication to reaching all those facing Alzheimer’s with information and support.
Carson has also broadened the Association’s strategy to engage celebrities and the entertainment community as voice multipliers to educate the public about the cause. Carson recently led the development and launch of “Music Moments,” a collection of new recordings and unreleased tracks by award-winning artists coming together to champion the fight for a world without Alzheimer’s disease and all dementia.
Prior to joining the Alzheimer’s Association, Carson led marketing and operations as executive vice president and chief marketing officer for an ad-supported tech-based start-up venture. He also held marketing leadership roles at FTD Flowers, Ogilvy & Mather, Orbitz Travel and FCB.
He served on the Google App Developer Council and the Discover Financial Services Merchant Advisory Board.
Carson received a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Notre Dame and a bachelor’s degree in business administration and marketing from Marquette University.
