Walk Manager

General Summary

The Walk Manager works with Association staff and the Walk to End Alzheimer's Planning Committee to champion the Association's mission and enhance the culture of diversity, advocacy and fund development.  The Walk Manager is responsible for the success and growth of our signature fundraising event, the Walk to End Alzheimer's, in five concurrent markets each fall season.  This includes recruiting and activating volunteers, identifying and recruiting new teams, cultivating and mentoring current teams, securing and expanding corporate sponsorships, logistical arrangements, and the marketing and promotion of the events. 

The Walk Manager is responsible for leading the fundraising effort toward achieving event revenue goals in each market.  The position is also expected to raise local awareness of the Walk to End Alzheimer's through engagement in networking events, speaking opportunities, and community events.  The Walk Manager will build relationships in the community with the goal of growing revenue and participation at the Walk and other Chapter special events.

Essential Job Functions

Walk to End Alzheimer's:

  • Ensure Walk volunteer committees are recruited, trained and developed on the Chapter's timeline and utilizing best practices, resulting in the attainment of income goal and team goals
  • Work collaboratively with the committee in the planning and implementation of the Walk.  This includes assisting with monthly committee meetings
  • Secure Walk corporate sponsorship, team and walker revenue
  • Meet or exceed goals on each walk event
  • Ensure smooth integration of the National Association and Chapter best practices, standards and guidelines
  • Recruit and coordinate Walk volunteers' participation, pre-walk volunteer management and day of event volunteer management
  • Coordinate with communications staff and oversee marketing efforts for Walk in collaboration with Development Staff (content for newsletter, brochures, website and participant mailings, fielding calls and inquiries from Media)
  • Schedule and organize outreach activities that promote the Alzheimer's Association mission and services, including community presentations and corporate engagement opportunities
  • Responsible for all collateral material, ordering supplies, data entry, and email distribution
  • Cultivate and steward relationships with all walk-related constituents
  • Work with Communications staff to create event press releases
  • Inventory Control - Manage all supplies, prepare, pack and oversee loading of supplies for all special events
  • Manage the set-up, execution, and load-out of each walk event
  • Post-Walk follow-up and thank you mailings and communication
  • Oversee recruitment and follow up pre/post calls to all Walkers
  • Travel throughout the Chapter Area with some overnight and weekend travel required

Special Events and Other Development Activities

  • Assist as needed on the following:
  • Identify and recruit committees, participants and in-kind donations
  • Manage correspondence, logistics, event planning and stewardship
  • Plan and execute volunteer cultivation and community events
  • Market and coordinate community events to increase third party event revenue
  • Plan and oversee Forget-Me-Not fundraising events
  • Support all Alzheimer's Association events and development activities

Minimum Requirements

  • 1-2 Years work experience in development, special events or similar field with proven results and track record with positive outcomes desired
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Experience with online fundraising software preferred.  Convio, Blackbaud etc.
  • Experience with event production and management, volunteer development and management, public relations, and corporate sponsor cultivation and relations
  • Knowledge of various mailing procedures and distribution of large amounts of materials
  • Ability to work with vendors such as graphic artists, printers, merchandise businesses, caterers and event management companies
  • Familiarity with legal issues such as insurance, permits, waivers, etc.
  • Ability to manage large numbers of volunteers at different levels of expertise with diplomacy
  • Ability to work with diverse communities and demonstrate inclusion
  • Ability to understand and work with budgets
  • Ability to travel occasionally throughout the Chapter area with some overnight and weekend travel required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills; professional customer service skills with visitors, callers and volunteers
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Self-starter, able to work independently and problem-solve
  • Willingness to work some evenings and weekends
  • Ability to work on a team and develop relationships in the community
  • Detail-oriented, efficient, and able to multi-task
  • Strong listening skills; professional, helpful manner with clients
