Overview and General Statement of Responsibilities:

The Alzheimer's Association is the world's leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer's care, support and research. The mission of the Alzheimer's Association is to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research, to provide and enhance care and support for all affected, and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. 

The Iowa Field Organizer will work to mobilize Iowans to take action on the issue of Alzheimer's and related dementias by engaging all candidates campaigning for President in Iowa.  The Iowa Field Organizer will assemble a core group of  volunteer leaders around the state, who in turn will work with the Field Organizer to recruit, educate and mobilize thousands of new volunteers.  The Iowa Field Organizer will work with Alzheimer's Association and Alzheimer's Impact Movement staff as part of a team to accomplish weekly, monthly and long-term goals leading up to the Iowa Caucuses in February of 2016.

Essential Job Functions

Core Job Duties:

  • Identify Volunteer Leaders: The Iowa Field Organizer will identify community volunteer leaders around the state who will serve as a local organizer.  The Iowa Field Organizer will train these Volunteer Leaders to organize, recruit and mobilize additional volunteers so that that they can continue organizing their community after the project is over.

  • Recruit Volunteers: The Iowa Field Organizer and Volunteer Leaders will work to recruit 15 new volunteer advocates every week, spending up 20 hours on the phone each week doing outreach to supporters and recruiting them to participate in community and campaign events.

  • Plan and Run Events:  The Iowa Field Organizer will plan the events and actions in which their volunteers participate. Examples of events that Organizer and Volunteer Leaders might run are letter-writing events, petitioning at county fairs, education events for supporters, and intercepting Presidential candidates at community events.

  • Record Keeping:  The Iowa Field Organizer and Volunteer Leaders will accurately record information on supporters they identify, community leaders they develop, the actions they plan and execute, as well as other information that could be useful for future organizing efforts. All data will be stored in Association databases.

  • Training:  The Iowa Field Organizer will lead grassroots training for advocates throughout the state and the Volunteer Leaders. The Organizer will teach advocates how to engage Iowa elected officials, presidential candidates and campaign surrogates.

Minimum Requirements

Strong communication, training and motivational skills, work ethic, and passion for Alzheimer's/health issues are essential.  Able to instill a non-partisan ethos, motivating advocates from a wide range of political ideologies to work together on Alzheimer's issues, and to engage in evenhanded, constructive way with both Democrat and Republican presidential candidates and their staff.  Must be able to work within a team, have proven leadership ability and campaign experience. Strong self-direction and the ability to take initiative are also necessary qualifications. Familiarity with industry standard tools and technology. 

Previous organizing experience and solid track record of success is required.


Position lasts through February 2016. Ideally, the Field Organizer will continue with Advocacy campaigns of the Alzheimer's Association and the position will report to the Director of Advocacy at the Alzheimer's Association.  All tactics are compliant with those allowable for 501C-3 non-profit organizations.    


Compensation will be commensurate with relevant professional experience.

Timing and Location:

The project has already started and the Iowa Field Organizer would need to be able to start ASAP. The position is located in Des Moines, IA.
