In coordination with and support from Governor Ron DeSantis and Secretary for the Florida Department of Elder Affairs (DOEA) Richard Prudom, the Alzheimer's Association launched the Project VITAL initiative in April 2020. The goal of Project VITAL is to create a network for connection, engagement, education and support of individuals with dementia and their families/caregivers to positively impact social isolation, stress and well-being. While we know that social isolation among people with dementia contributes to individual decline and stress among family caregivers, this stress is also felt by staff.
One benefit of Project VITAL is the opportunity for our long-term care communities to come together to participate in a special Project ECHO series based on the Alzheimer’s Association guidance Emergency Preparedness: Caring for persons living with dementia in a long-term or community-based care setting. Project ECHO is being used across the globe to share best practice recommendations and provide guidance and support in managing care of complex diseases, like Alzheimer’s disease and all dementia.
Project ECHO provides access to best practice care for residents and caregivers, and provides a sense of community for providers, reduces isolation in roles and improves professional satisfaction.
Using video conference technology, dementia care experts and providers from community-based and long term care setting come together to share real life examples and participate in discussions in the areas of person-centered care, illness prevention, resident engagement and connectedness to family and friends, nutrition support, mobility and wandering, and recognizing and discussing strategies related to dementia-related behaviors in emergency situations.

Each session will consist of a one hour-long Zoom virtual meeting held over 5 weeks. We ask communities to agree to 1) Participate in all 5 video sessions from 3-4 EST; 2) Use the opportunity to bring together key leadership and staff to participate in each session; 3) Submit a case study for discussion; 4) Participate in a post-evaluation at the conclusion of the series; and 5) Have access to a webcam and internet.
