All Americans face health risks from Alzheimer’s – the only leading disease without a prevention or cure – but Black Americans are at higher risk than any other population group, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

The statistical fact is that Black Americans are twice as likely as their White counterparts to develop Alzheimer’s. While researchers do not believe that genetic factors account for the difference, high blood pressure and diabetes — suspected risk factors for Alzheimer’s and other dementias — are more prevalent in the Black community. Despite that fact, Blacks are less likely to get a diagnosis.

To help bridge the information gap, the Alzheimer’s Association of Colorado is working with sponsors the Denver alumnae of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and The Caregivers Guardian to present a special online webinar on the “10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s” on Saturday morning, Dec. 18.

“It is essential for our African-American community to understand that there are a number of warning signs of Alzheimer’s, including memory loss, that are not a part of normal aging,” said Rosalyn Reese, director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for the Association in the Rocky Mountain region. “This free webinar provides valuable information on the importance of early detection, what resources are available in the community, and what we should be doing if we see these warning signs in a loved one.”

The 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s are:
  • Memory loss that disrupts daily life
  • Challenges in planning or solving problems
  • Difficulty completing familiar tasks
  • Confusion with time or place
  • Trouble understanding visual images and distances
  • New problems in speech or comprehension
  • Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps
  • Decreased or poor judgment
  • Changes in ability to work or socialize
  • Changes in mood and personality
The webinar will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18. To register, call the Alzheimer’s Association’s free 24-hour Helpline at 800-272-3900 or register at: https://bit.ly/10Signs_DEC18
