Angel McClure knows that her husband, Adam, worries about Alzheimer’s disease. It runs in his family. That’s when Angel, and 11-year-old son Bobby, decided to take action.
“I don’t want us to live our lives in fear of Alzheimer’s,” said Angel. “I want to learn more so that we won’t be afraid.”
A dental assistant during the day, Angel’s alter ego is super Alzheimer’s volunteer, carrying the message locally and nationally, whether through passionate presentations or tasty cakes.
A quick ramp-up
Just a year ago, Angel connected with Ann Carter, former Southern Colorado director for the Alzheimer’s Association. Angel offered to get involved “in any way” to support the Alzheimer’s cause, and Ann threw everything but the kitchen sink at her.
“I started volunteering a year ago,” said Angel. “I taught some classes. I got involved in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s committee.”
Angel even joined “ALZ Team Tipton,” a group of Alzheimer’s Association volunteers who meet with U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton (Third Congressional District) to ensure he and his team are aware of the importance of Alzheimer’s disease, research to find a cure and any pending legislation of importance to the cause.
Time to raise money for research
This year, Angel decided to up her game a notch and raise money herself through the Alzheimer’s Association’s The Longest Day fundraiser. That’s where Bobby comes in.
“Bobby likes to work in the kitchen,” said his proud momma. As the duo brainstormed ideas of food items they could create and sell to friends, family and neighbors, Bobby volunteered to make his “famous salsa,” while Angel chipped in cheesecakes, hummingbird cakes and chocolate chip cookies. Angel’s husband and sister, Kelli, joined in, making it a total family effort.
The result: $1,130 (and counting) raised to support research to find a cure for the sixth-leading cause of death in the U.S. And while the sale is over, Angel is still hoping that donations will help her reach her goal of $1,600 to fund research. There are too many other families like hers living with dread of Alzheimer’s, including 76,000 in Colorado alone and nearly 6 million across the United States.
“We need to find a cure for Alzheimer’s,” Angel said. “We’re not going to be afraid.”
