When you or your loved one is living with dementia and you don't know where to turn for information, the Alzheimer's Association is here to help. Individuals and families can make an appointment with an Alzheimer's Association staff member, who will help assess their needs, problem-solve, and provide information about other resources in the community. The care consultant will assist in creating a written action plan that will help the family know what steps they need to take next. Common topics include:

  • Information about the process of getting a diagnosis.
  • Understanding dementia as it is affecting you or your loved one now and preparing you for the changes you may see in the future.
  • Working through difficult transitions such as limiting driving, bringing in respite care, or moving to a care community.
  • Learning the best way to respond when faced with challenges such as refusal of medication, agitation, or any other behaviors.
  • Managing day-to-day needs such as bathing and dressing.
  • Communication tips.
  • Education about late-stage care and end-of-life decisions.

There is no cost for this service. Care Consultations are currently provided over the phone, through video conferencing, or e-mail. The service is available to individuals or a group. Individuals and families are encouraged to schedule a care consultation at any point in the disease process but may want to schedule follow-up appointments as needs change and new issues arise.
