Programs and Objectives

The Alzheimer's Association Delaware Valley Chapter's Learning Academy offers the following FREE consumer education programs, which are offered throughout the 18 counties in its service area.

Dementia Conversations
Attendees will learn:

  • To share tips for having difficult conversation around some of the most common issues that arise regarding Alzheimer’s or another dementia
  • To reinforce the need to plan ahead and build a care team that communicates well, in order to reduce the stress that can accompany a disease like Alzheimer’s
  • To connect attendees with helpful resources to enhance quality of life for everyone involved
  • To give attendees the opportunity to hear from people who are dealing with similar issues

Effective Communication Strategies
Attendees will learn how to:

  • Explain the communication changes that take place throughout the course of the disease.
  • Decode the verbal and behavioral messages delivered by someone with dementia and respond in ways that are helpful to the person.
  • Identify strategies to connect and communicate at each stage of the disease.

Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body: Tips from the Latest Research
Attendees will learn:

  • Research in the areas of diet and nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity and social engagement
  • Hands-on tools to incorporate these recommendations into a plan for healthy aging - at any age

Know the 10 Signs: Early Detection Matters
Attendees will learn:

  • The 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease
  • How to become prepared if warning signs occur
  • Why early detection is important
  • About Alzheimer’s disease and dementia and some of the risk factors know some of the risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease
  • How a healthy lifestyle and brain health are related

Legal and Financial Planning
Attendees will learn:

  • Legal and medical instructions and advance directives, legal declarations (guardianship and conservatorship) and documentation, role of legal advisors and how to access their services
  • Financial instructions, directives, documentation, means of paying for long term care (LTC), and role of financial advisors and how to access their services

Living with Alzheimer’s For Caregivers: Understanding Early Stage
Attendees will learn:

  • The symptoms of early stage of Alzheimer’s disease
  • Resource planning for early stage
  • The components of a care team and how to successfully work with each component during the early stage of the disease

Living with Alzheimer’s For Caregivers: Understanding Middle Stage
Attendees will learn:

  • The symptoms of middle stage of Alzheimer’s disease/Communication/Relationship changes/Providing Personal Care/Preparing for Hospitalizations
  • Middle Stage Behavior changes/Medication management/Home Safely/ Driving/ Wandering/Living Alone
  • Day Services/In-Home care Services/Senior Living Options/Caregiver Needs for middle Stage

Living with Alzheimer’s For Caregivers: Understanding Late Stage
Attendees will learn:

  • The symptoms of late stage of Alzheimer’s disease/the “Self” of the person with Alzheimer’s/Changes in Caregiving Role/Communication changes/Physical changes/Working with Doctors
  • Resources for late stage care/”The Promise” and Making a Move/Monitoring care/Legal Plans/Efforts at Life Extension/End-of-Life issues

Living with Alzheimer’s: Persons with Dementia and their Caregivers
Attendees will learn:

  • Understanding Alzheimer’s disease and memory loss
  • Partnering with your medical team
  • Effective communication and telling others about the diagnosis
  • Coping with changes and making decisions
  • Daily strategies and safety issues
  • Opportunities for supporting research
  • Resources for people with early-stage Alzheimer's disease

Memory Loss, Dementia and Alzheimer’s: The Basics
Attendees will learn:

  • Symptoms and effects of Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia
  • How Alzheimer’s affects the brain
  • Causes and risk factors
  • How to find out if it’s Alzheimer’s disease
  • The benefits of early detection
  • How to address a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease

Understanding and Responding to Dementia-Related Behavior
Attendees will learn:

  • Identify common triggers for behaviors associated with dementia
  • Explain the process for assessing and identifying challenging behaviors
  • List strategies to address common dementia-related behaviors

All Educational Programs are FREE
Registration is REQUIRED 7 days in advance of program date
