The Judy Fund wishes you a Happy Thanksgiving!
The Gelfand family is thankful for your ongoing support of The Judy Fund.
Dear Family and Friends,

There's no better way to remind ourselves why we need a world without Alzheimer's than by looking around the Thanksgiving table at the faces of the people we love. I'm so grateful that you've joined with the Gelfand family to end this disease through your support of The Judy Fund.
November is National Family Caregivers Month — a time when we honor the millions of family members serving as Alzheimer's caregivers. Pictured here are Judy Jaffe Gelfand (R), caregiver for her mother, Gertrude Jaffe (L). Both lost their brains to Alzheimer's.
This month we honor the selfless dedication of family caregivers.
Nearly two-thirds of the more than 6 million people living with Alzheimer's in the United States — about 3.8 million individuals — are women, and many who aren't living with the disease are caring for someone who is. The Alzheimer's Association estimates that two-thirds of caregivers are women, and that many wives are caring not only for their parents, but their husbands' parents, too.

So it's fitting that through The Judy Fund, female scientists and philanthropists are taking the lead on research that can unlock the mysteries of a disease that exacts a disproportionate toll on mothers and grandmothers, sisters and daughters — yielding knowledge that promises to benefit all people living with or at risk for Alzheimer's. Thanks to your commitment to The Judy Fund, researchers are pursuing every avenue to unravel the mysteries of Alzheimer's disease in women.

When your family and friends gather for Thanksgiving dinner, give extra thanks and love for the women at your table, who are at higher risk of developing Alzheimer's and often carry the burden of disease.

Elizabeth Gelfand Stearns poses with Roberta Diaz Brinton, Ph.D., University of Arizona. Dr. Brinton's research, one of many studies made possible by your generous support of The Judy Fund, seeks to determine whether the loss of estrogen in mid-life promotes Alzheimer's disease in women who have a genetic risk factor for dementia.
Every act of generosity counts on #GivingTuesday.
I know there are many causes dear to your heart, but I wanted to ask: Will you please support The Judy Fund for #GivingTuesday, November 30? This international day of giving is the perfect time to continue your commitment to end Alzheimer's disease.

Having lost two matriarchs — our mother Judy and grandmother Gertrude — to Alzheimer's, the Gelfand family knows firsthand how cruel this disease is. We know that this disease disproportionately affects women, which is why The Judy Fund is committed to funding women's brain research, for all the matriarchs, all around the world. We know that together, we are making a difference.

As Maria C. Carillo Ph.D., Chief Science Officer of the Alzheimer's Association, recently said, "We are on the verge of something truly transformational. The first survivor of Alzheimer's disease may be reading this now. It's not a matter of if we will find an answer; it's a matter of when."

Thank you in advance for your support on this important day, to help us kick off this season of giving.

The Judy Fund National Team hits its stride for Walk to End Alzheimer's®!
The Judy Fund National Walk Team is steps away from national goal!

The Judy Fund is grateful for Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity.
The Judy Fund is honored to be the national charity of choice for Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity, and we remain impressed by the dedication, creativity and spirit displayed by so many chapters. Despite the demands of collegiate life and careers, Sammy students and alums make time to advance our cause. We are humbled and forever grateful for their help. This year we are especially thankful for the 16 teams that stepped up to show their support at Walk to End Alzheimer's — seven of which are recognized as overall top fundraising teams!

Sigma Alpha Mu's support of The Judy Fund doesn't stop at Walk. In 2013, the Sammys adopted No Shave November as its signature fundraising event for The Judy Fund, and now, each year, these gentlemen put down their razors to grow beards, awareness and money for the fight against the disease. So far, they have raised more than $130,000 from this effort alone.

Our beloved Sammys also give their time and support to participate in The Longest Day, an Association event held on the summer solstice — the day with the most light — that asks participants to fight the darkness of Alzheimer's through a fundraising activity of their choice.

The dependable support of Sigma Alpha Mu, combined with your generous commitment, helps The Judy Fund take a leadership role in the fight against this devastating disease.

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to let you know how much we appreciate you, and I encourage you to take this opportunity to make a donation to our global efforts to fund gender-specific research focused on women's brains and Alzheimer's.

We are so grateful for each one of you. Happy Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,
Elizabeth Gelfand Stearns Elizabeth Gelfand Stearns
