Thyroid issue may increase dementia risk
Older adults with an underactive thyroid gland may be vulnerable to developing dementia, new study results suggest. Researchers found that among 15,000 older Taiwanese adult study subjects, those who'd been treated for low levels of thyroid hormones were more likely to be diagnosed with dementia. Additional research is needed to understand the exact relationship, if any, between the two conditions. Learn more.

Take precautions to avoid issues with multiple medications
A person living with Alzheimer's or another dementia may be prescribed multiple medications and also have prescriptions for other conditions. Care needs to be taken with all medications and when more than one is being used. Learn more.

Experiences of racism associated with cognitive decline
Study results presented at the recent Alzheimer's Association International Conference® (AAIC®) suggested that facing structural, interpersonal and institutional racism is associated with lower memory scores and worse cognition in midlife and old age, especially among Black individuals. Researchers said structural racism that affects brain health includes lower income, lower-quality early life education, and less access to healthy food and proper health care. Learn more.

Take precautions when traveling with someone living with Alzheimer's
A person living with Alzheimer's or another dementia may be able to participate in meaningful activities such as travel. However, it does require planning to ensure safety and enjoyment for everyone. Learn more.
