Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio – The Alzheimer’s Association celebration of The Longest Day started as a single-day, pop-up awareness and fundraising initiative tied to the summer solstice. With growing success, returning teams have planned fundraising and awareness activities throughout the year – choosing to celebrate their yearlong efforts on the solstice instead. To kick off 2020 and welcome new participants, the Greater East Ohio Area Chapter is holding a kickoff at Ohio Brewing Co. (2250 Front St., Cuyahoga Falls) on Thursday, February 13, 2020 (5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.)

“The Longest Day is the day with the most light, the summer solstice, and we believe our participants are standing up to the darkness of Alzheimer’s disease around the world,” states Marcy Schulman, development coordinator with the Alzheimer’s Association.

Participation in The Longest Day can take many forms, from hosting a barbecue, a wine-and-paint, a lemonade stand, or it can be more endurance-focused like hiking, cycling, or bowling. As the initiative has grown, individual events have started to occur throughout the year.

“Teams are getting more and more creative, but what unifies us is a connection to someone who’s had this disease, and we all have a reason to end Alzheimer’s and dementia,” Schulman adds. More than 220,000 Ohioans are living with Alzheimer’s, a number expected to reach a quarter million by 2025.

The February 13 kickoff at Ohio Brewing Co. in Cuyahoga Falls will be an opportunity to learn about local services for families provided by the Alzheimer’s Association for free, supported by The Longest Day fundraising. Funds raised also support research to end Alzheimer’s, and efforts to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

For those unable to attend on Feb. 13, another kickoff will be held in the Cleveland Area on Feb. 6 at Market Garden Brewpub (5-7 p.m.)

Teams registered for The Longest Day by the kickoff will be entered into a drawing, held at the kickoff, to win a Kendra Scott 2018 Summer Collection Cassidy pendant with 28-inch chain, featuring lilac pearl and rose gold. “Perfect for Valentine’s Day,” as described by Schulman.
