The Young Professional Alzheimer’s Advocates of Lansing’s (YPAAL) mission is to serve the Greater Lansing community by raising awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and providing support for Alzheimer's Association programs, services, events and families affected by this disease.

Michigan RivALZ
Spring 2017 – Ann Arbor

For the past two years, rival teams from Lansing and Ann Arbor have gone head to head to raise funds and awareness for the Alzheimer's Association by holding a female flag football game. We need your help to make 2018's game the best yet by signing up to cheer, coach, or simply joining our planning committee.  Follow Michigan RivALZ on Facebook for more information.

Wine Tasting – For a Cause!
September 8, 2016 – East Lansing

One of YPAAL’s most popular events returned for another year. Tasting great wines and raising money for the Lansing Walk to End Alzheimer’s – what could be better?

Habitat for Humanity Service Event
August 27, 2016 – Lansing

YPAAL partnered with Habitat for Humanity Capital Region to help clean up a property that will eventually be provided to a Habitat family.

Alzheimer’s Awareness Night at Comerica Park
August 20, 2016 – Detroit

YPAAL and YPAAW members joined other Alzheimer’s Association supporters attended Alzheimer’s Awareness Night at Comerica Park and watched the Detroit Tigers take on the Boston Red Sox.

Brew Run for Alzheimer’s
August 9, 2016 - Lansing

Partnering with Lansing Brewing Company, Playmakers, the Michigan Fitness Foundation, and the Gillespie Group, YPAAL’s Lansing Walk to End Alzheimer’s team was the charity partner for Lansing Brewing Company’s August Brew Run. Participants in the run donated to support the cause. YPAAL Co-Chair Terry Streetman spoke about Alzheimer’s disease, YPAAL, and the work of the Alzheimer’s Association. The event raised nearly $500 for the cause.

State Advocacy Day
May 3, 2016 – Lansing

At the annual State Advocacy Day, YPAAL members joined advocates from around the state at the Michigan Capitol to speak to their legislators about Alzheimer’s disease, tell their stories, and let our elected officials know what is needed to help win the fight to end Alzheimer’s disease.

Spring Spruce-Up at Crosaires
May 1, 2016 – Williamston

One of YPAAL’s most beloved events returned for its 4th consecutive year, as volunteers visited Crosaires, an “Aging in Community” residence in Williamston to help with some spring cleaning. Volunteers weeded gardens, hauled branches, cleaned furniture, and more.

Michigan RivALZ Tailgate, Game, & After Party
April 24, 2016 – East Lansing

In the shadow of Spartan Stadium, young professionals from the Lansing and Ann Arbor areas battled each other in a classic rivalry game to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association. After the game, players and fans got together at Lansing Brewing Company to celebrate, enjoy craft beers and cocktails, and bid on silent auction items. The inaugural Michigan RivALZ game raised more than $35,000 for the cause. Next year’s event will be held in Ann Arbor.

RivALZ Team MSU Practices
April 13 & 18, 2016 – East Lansing

Team MSU held their official practices to get ready to take on Team Michigan in the inaugural Michigan RivALZ game. Practices were held near Macdonald Middle School in East Lansing.

Alzheimer’s Advocacy Forum
April 4-6, 2016 – Washington, DC

Brent Oldham and Terry Streetman represented YPAAL at the national Alzheimer’s Advocacy Forum in Washington, DC, joining nearly 1,200 advocates from around the nation. At the Forum, Brent and Terry met with their federal legislators and helped advocate for better funding and support of Alzheimer’s disease research and support. They also attended a young advocates reception and networked and learned from other young professionals groups from around the country.

RivALZ Team MSU Kickoff Party
February 21, 2016 - Lansing

The inaugural Michigan RivALZ season officially kicked off as Team MSU players and fans gathered at American Fifth Spirits distillery in Lansing to enjoy craft cocktails and get pumped up for the big game. A percentage of proceeds from the event, which included special purple cocktails, were donated to RivALZ.

YPAAL and YPAAW Holiday Party
December 6, 2015 - Howell

YPAAL and our sister group YPAAW got together at Aubree’s in Howell to celebrate a successful 2015 and look forward to big plans in 2016.

October 24, 2015 – Mason

YPAAL and friends gathered to celebrate Halloween, as well as the success of recent events such as the Walk to End Alzheimer’s and The Longest Day.

Lansing Walk to End Alzheimer’s
September 13, 2015 – Lansing

Team YPAAL’s 18 members raised more than $4,000 for the Lansing Walk to End Alzheimer’s, helping the Lansing Walk raise more than $170,000 for Alzheimer's care, support and research.

Kickoff to the Walk – Patio Party
September 12, 2015 – Lansing

The night before the 2015 Lansing Walk to End Alzheimer’s, YPAAL and friends got together in Downtown Lansing for a night of socializing, food and drink, and fundraising for the cause.

Wine Tasting Fundraiser
July 23, 2015 – Haslett

YPAAL and friends gathered in Haslett for a wine tasting fundraiser to support the YPAAL Walk to End Alzheimer’s team. The event raised more than $150 for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, thanks in part to prizes donated by generous local businesses.

The Longest Day – Karaoke Fundraiser
June 20, 2015 – East Lansing

On June 20, 2015, YPAAL gathered at Crunchy's in East Lansing for a karaoke fundraiser for The Longest Day. Held annually on or around the summer solstice, the duration of this sunrise-to-sunset event symbolizes the challenging journey of those living with the disease and their caregivers. YPAAL raised more than $1,200 through their fundraising efforts.

State Advocacy Day
May 5, 2015 – Lansing

YPAAL members raised their voices at the 2015 Michigan Alzheimer's Advocacy Day at the State Capitol in Lansing on Tuesday, May 5. Members shared their stories with state Representatives and Senators and asked for their support for state programs which will assist families faced with this devastating disease. YPAAL also received a legislative tribute from State Senator Curtis Hertel, Jr., State Representative Sam Singh, and Governor Rick Snyder.

Spring Spruce Up at Crosaires
April 25, 2015 – Williamston

The 3rd annual Spring Spruce Up was held at Crosaires in Williamston on April 25, 2015. Crosaires is an assisted living home that offers its residents the opportunity to live fully integrated lives, direct their own plan of care with the assistance of others and be honored for the individuals they were and are today.

Alzheimer's Advocacy Forum
March 23-25 – Washington, D.C.

Brent Oldham represented YPAAL at the National Alzheimer's Forum in Washington, D.C.  Held annually, the Alzheimer's Association Advocacy Forum is the nation’s premier Alzheimer's disease public policy event. The itinerary included a Young Advocates Training and Networking Program, a dinner and reception emceed by Award-winning journalist Wolf Blitzer, and a full day of lobbying senators and congressmen on the Hill. Thanks for your hard work, Brent!

Purple Pub Crawl
March 13, 2015 – Lansing

YPAAL once again painted Downtown Lansing purple with our Purple Pub Crawl, taking over Taps 25 and The Tin Can. The event raised nearly $400 to support YPAAL member Brent Oldham’s trip to the national Alzheimer’s Advocacy Forum, and helped to increase awareness and visibility of the Alzheimer’s Association in the community.

YPAAL + YPAAW Holiday Get-Together
December 14 – Howell

Our YPAAL & YPAAW groups gathered together with our friends & families for our first official face-to-face meeting! We celebrated the holidays and everything our groups had accomplished this year. Stay tuned for more great ways our young professional groups are collaborating in 2015!

Gift Wrapping for a Cause
December 17 – Lansing

YPAAL-ers rang in the season with a very special fundraiser, as they wrapped gifts at the Lansing Mall in exchange for suggested donations. The group plans to use the funds to send one of their member's to the 2015 Advocacy Forum in Washington D.C.

Adopt a Platoon: Holiday Cards for Heroes
December 6, 2014 – East Lansing

Our YPAAL group gathered together to make and send cards to troops currently serving overseas.

2014 Walk to End Alzheimer's
September 14, 2014 – Michigan State Capitol

Team YPAAL’s 13 members raised $4,624 for the Lansing Walk to End Alzheimer’s, helping the Lansing Walk surpass its goal of $150,000 raised.

Purple Pub Crawl
September 10, 2014 – Downtown Lansing

Headshots for Hope Fundraiser
August 23, 2014 – Old Town Lansing

YPAAL partnered with Lansing photographer Michael McPeak to provide professional headshots at a discounted price, with all proceeds going to YPAAL’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s team. The event raised more than $500 for the YPAAL Walk to End Alzheimer’s team.

YPAAL and friends gathered in Fowlerville for a wine tasting and raffle fundraiser to support the YPAAL Walk to End Alzheimer’s team. The event raised more than $200 for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

Whitehills Health Care Center Service Event
May 31, 2014 – East Lansing, MI

YPAAL members spent time with residents of Whitehills Health Care Center, talking, coloring, playing games, and completing puzzles.

Spring Spruce-Up Service Event
April 12, 2014 – Williamston, MI

YPAAL celebrated National Volunteer Week by providing support to Crosaires, an assisted living facility in Williamston. YPAAL members raked leaves, cleared fallen branches, planted flowers, tilled garden beds, spread mulch, and more to help facility owner Todd Walter. Additional support was provided by Home Depot in Okemos, which donated supplies, and Hungry Howies in Williamston, which provided pizza for the volunteers.

Happy Hour Fundraiser
April 10, 2014 – Waterfront Bar & Grill

Waterfront Bar & Grill hosted YPAAL’s monthly happy hour, provided a special menu of food and drink, and donated a portion of the proceeds to support local Alzheimer’s Association Ambassadors attending the national Alzheimer’s Advocacy Forum in Washington, DC. The event raised $250 to help defray the Ambassadors’ travel costs.

Alzheimer's Advocacy Day
March 27, 2014 – Michigan State Capitol Building

YPAAL members proudly wore purple and joined with advocates from across the state to meet with lawmakers for Alzheimer's Advocacy Day at the State Capitol. We shared personal stories and asked legislators to support the Michigan Care and Support Pilot Program in the Michigan Department of Community Health budget. 2013 Walk to End Alzheimer’s
September 22, 2013 – Michigan State Capitol

Our 2013 YPAAL Walk team raised $2,760 for the 2013 Lansing Walk to End Alzheimer's. The Lansing Walk surpassed its goal raising over $130,000 in 2013.

Spring Outdoors Service Event
April 27, 2013 – Williamston, MI

On Saturday, April 27th during National Volunteer Week, the Young Professional Alzheimer’s Advocates of Lansing (YPAAL) provided volunteer support to Crosaires, an assisted living facility in Williamston. The group volunteered as part of their “Spring Outdoors” event. Volunteers raked leaves and pine needles, tilled new garden beds, mulched, trimmed trees, collected fallen branches, and hauled firewood to help Todd Walter, owner of the facility. Additional support for the event was provided by Home Depot in Okemos, which donated gardening supplies and flowers.

The volunteer group consisted of area professionals, MSU students, and local volunteers who read about the event in the community paper. MSU student Megan Geist said, "I really enjoyed Crosiares. Todd gave me a different way to look at nursing facilities. Thanks to all who helped. It was a fabulous day and a very inspiring morning.” YPAAL plans to hold many more social, service, and professional development events in the Lansing area.

Crosaires, Gaelic for "crossroads," is an "Aging in Community" residence. They believe an elder is still growing, thriving and learning. It is a state licensed private residence that is home to no more than six individuals who may require any and all assistance with activities of daily living.
