the African American Community

Many African American families are caring for loved ones at home. The experience of such caregiving can be strenuous, exhausting, and even dangerous if not done properly.

The Alzheimer’s Association – North Central Texas Chapter is pleased to announce the 2012 African American Caregiver Seminar, Share Your Love: Understanding Caregiving in the African American Family.

Distinguished experts in law, medicine, caregivng and financial planning will address inportant aspects of taking care of loved ones. Lunch will be served, and attendees will have a chance to meet representatives of businesses that serve the needs of caregivers.

Judge L. Clifford Davis opened the first African American Law Office in Texas and organized the Fort Worth Black Bar Association. He won the litigation to integrate the Mansfield Independent School District, and worked with Justice Thurgood Marshall in the landmark case, Brown vs. Board of Education, Topeka, Kansas.
  Alzheimers: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Madge L Barnes, MD, has won numerous honors and awards, and was included in Consumer Research Council of America  Listing as “One of the Best Family Doctors in America” in 2007.

The Importance of Long Term Care Planning
Kathy Dorsey, an expert in long term care planning, will talk about the specific steps you can take ahead of time to better prepare you and your family to deal with a long-term care need. This workshop is not only for caregivers, but for anyone who wants to be prepared for possible future needs.

  Caregivers, Alzheimer's and Aging Survival Kit
Patricia Bailey cared for her mother, who had Alzheimer’s, from 1994 until her passing in 2004. She then used her thirty years of experience in developing products for niche consumer groups to form her company, Advance Comfort™ which provides products specific to the senior care market. Patricia is an excellent speaker who understands the emotional needs of caregivers.
