The Alzheimer’s Disease Caregiver Support Initiative, a nonprofit organization based in Northern New York state that brings free support services to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia caregivers, is pleased to partner with the Alzheimer’s Association Northeastern New York chapter to increase access to support services in Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton, Warren and Washington Counties.

Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia, is a progressive, fatal brain disease. More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, including 410,000 people in New York. 586,000 New York residents serve as unpaid family caregivers. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to cause emotional distress among caregivers who are dealing with increasing feelings of burnout, depression, isolation and anxiety.

Through this partnership, caregivers will have increased access to free education programs, support groups and consultation services. Furthermore, outreach efforts will focus on raising awareness of Alzheimer’s disease, educating the community to identify the warning signs of dementia and stressing the importance of an early and accurate diagnosis.

“We are grateful for this opportunity to team up with our friends at the Alzheimer’s Association to expand our program to include more free services to North Country caregivers,” said Valarie Drown, MS, NCC, LMHC, project director, Alzheimer’s Disease Caregiver Support Initiative. “It is critical to continue providing information and support in rural communities where availability and access is often limited.

“We understand the challenges caregivers of those with Alzheimer’s face and we are here to help,” said Beth Smith-Boivin, executive director, Alzheimer’s Association Northeastern New York chapter. “It is our goal with this collaboration to build upon our existing relationships and add support services to increase the reach and help improve the quality of life for those affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia in our region.”
