2019 GAAIN Exploration to Evaluate Novel Alzheimer's Queries (GEENA-Q)

Robust synaptic and white matter integrity in ApoE e2 carriers

Apolipoprotein E (APOE) is a gene that has several variations, each one producing a slightly different version of ApoE protein. One variation of the APOE gene, called APOE-e4, is a known risk factor for Alzheimer’s; whereas another genetic variation called, APOE-e2, is thought to provide reduced risk for Alzheimer’s.  However, the underlying mechanisms by which different changes of the APOE gene impact Alzheimer’s risk are not yet clear. Dr. Duygu  Tosun-Turgut proposes to use the (Global Alzheimer’s Association Interactive Network) GAAIN datasets from at least four leading Alzheimer’s large and well known studies, to investigate the protective effects of APOE-e2 in older adults. The study results may improve our understanding of how APOE-e2 impacts changes in the aging brain.
