Since 1981, the Alzheimer's Association Rochester & Finger Lakes Region Chapter has been the local leader in care and support for those affected by Alzheimer’s and other dementias. With offices in Rochester and in the Southern Tier, we serve a nine-county area of New York State that includes Chemung, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne and Yates counties.

One of the earliest chapters of the Alzheimer's Association, the Rochester & Finger Lakes Region chapter was founded by a small group of concerned family members. Wayne County resident Debra Mayberry whose father had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s was one of those family members.

Debra Mayberry became a consummate champion in the fight against Alzheimer’s after her father died from complications related to the disease. In 1981, she met with representatives of the seven founding Alzheimer’s Association chapters from around the country. When she returned home, she placed an ad in the Democrat and Chronicle, announcing a public meeting at the library for those seeking answers about the disease. Eighty people showed up and, at that meeting, they decided to start the Rochester chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Debra, an honorary member of the chapter’s advisory board, remains active in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease and joins the team of staff and hundreds of volunteers in providing care and support, advocating for affected families in our region, and supporting research efforts to find a cure, prevention or treatment.
