In Little River, SC, a young lady with a big heart is serving up baked goods and smiles to raise funds and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association through The Longest Day.

At just three and a half years old, Lia has been baking almost all of her life. She is known to her community as “Little Ms. Sunshine” because of her compassion for others. Together with her great grandmother, Martha, Lia loves to do thoughtful things like baking goodies for neighbors.

“Lia loves making cookies, brownies and quick breads,” Martha shared with us. “When I learned about The Longest Day, I mentioned to Lia about baking and she said she wanted to join in.”

This is a cause that is close to both of their hearts. Martha’s mom (Lia's great, great grandmother) was diagnosed with Alzheimer's at the young age of around 68 years old. She passed away 10 days before her 80th birthday on January 15, 2000.

“Lia never met her, but Lia's mom was about a year old when we starting taking her to the nursing home to visit my mom,” said Martha. “It's heartbreaking to see your loved one fade.”

“Hopefully Lia and everyone else in this fundraiser can be part of finding a cure with the donations received,” said Martha.

Lia has already gone shopping for ingredients and is taking preorders for baked goods from members of her community. She is offering cookies, brownies, zucchini bread, banana bread (plain or with chocolate chips or cranberries) and peanut butter fudge.

Lia always shares her smile and compassion for others and that's what brought us to the idea for Lia's Sunshine Bakery. It’s perfect fit for the fundraiser,” said Martha. “I'm sure my mom is smiling down at her.”

Baking is just one of many activities that you can do for The Longest Day! It’s not too late to plan an activity on or around the summer solstice on June 21. Learn more at alz.org/tld
