National Volunteer Week is April 18-24, 2021. Each day this week, we'll be spotlighting one of our rockstar volunteers here at the South Carolina Chapter.

Meet Tatanish, a volunteer community educator and our Walk to End Alzheimer's Chair in Rock Hill, SC.

Q: What brought you to volunteer with the Alzheimer’s Association?
A:
My passion for finding a cure is personal, my maternal grandmother, who helped raise me, was diagnosed and passed away in 2008 and since I have been volunteering I have lost so many people close to me. I volunteer because I want to see a cure, I want to see a white flower!

Q: What volunteer role(s) do you have with the Association?
A:
I am currently the Event Chair for the 2021 Rock Hill Walk to End Alzheimer's; I have worked as the Diversity Chair and volunteered on Team Retention committee. I am also a Certified Dementia Educator.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your volunteer role?
A:
I get to help others by educating, advocating and working to find a cure.

Q: What aspect of your role do you feel makes the biggest impact?
A:
My role as a Certified Dementia Educator means the world to me. I lost my paternal grandmother last month (March 2021) and on the day that we were scheduled to bury her, I had a commitment to speak and I kept my promise to present. I was tearful and I had to fight through it, but my granny was also a strong woman and she kept her word, what better way to honor her memory than to present, educate and let others know that we all need to join in this fight together to find a cure.

Q: If someone were considering volunteering with the Association, what would you say to them?
A:
Please volunteer your time, your commitment to finding a cure and educating others will be one of the most fulfilling things you will do in your lifetime. I make it a goal to wear something purple so many times a month so that I do not forget my grandmothers (currently my nails are purple) and I plan to honor all of my loved ones lost by continuing to be their Purple Warrior: fighting, educating and praying that we find a CURE...

Thank you, Tatanish, for your commitment to community education and awareness. Our volunteer community educators help us reach more people than would otherwise be possible with vital information, care strategies and support.

Volunteers are truly at the heart of our work at the Alzheimer's Association, and we invite you to lend your unique talents to the fight to #ENDALZ! View local volunteer opportunities and get started.
