A Sunny Project in Winters Midst

Last winter, Elizabeth DeLong, the brand new activities director at Oak Park Place in Wauwatosa, engaged the residents in the memory care wing with a Van Gogh Sunflower Project, an idea she first saw on Pinterest.  “I envisioned the residents painting their own sunflowers and then pasting them to a canvas they had already painted,” said Elizabeth.

One of Elizabeth’s artists was a former house painter, another one had experience painting dishes, and yet another had traveled the world with his wife visiting art museums. Elizabeth said, “I love working with all my residents, however, leading activities in our memory care wing is where I thrive.  To be a part of that moment, no matter how brief, when a resident with advanced dementia experiences joy, is the best feeling and what keeps me coming back everyday.”

Many thanks to Elizabeth and all the wonderful individuals working in care facilities who truly make a difference everyday in the lives of others.

“If you hear a voice within you say ‘you cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.”  Vincent Van Gogh
