Navigating the Journey Through Dementia Care, hosted by the Alzheimer’s Association West Texas Chapter, is a learning opportunity for family and professional caregivers, offered at no cost to participants. Presentations include Texas estate planning, Medicare benefits, including annual wellness exams & care planning and caregiver stress management.

Alzheimer’s Advance Care Planning - Patricia Carter, MSN, RN

Patricia Carter received her MSN and BSN from Northwestern State University.  She has 45 years’ experience as an Oncology and Hospice Nurse.

Mrs. Carter will share the importance of advance care planning in light of family dynamics and cultural factors that may influence the advance care plan.

Texas Estate Planning - Basic Considerations - Alan D. Gluth, J.D., Manager of Gluth Law, LLC

Alan Gluth received his law degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1998.  He is board certified in estate planning and probate law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization of the State Bar of Texas.

Mr. Gluth will discuss legal planning when facing Alzheimer’s or other dementia.  Learn about the importance of different legal documents, their purpose and what is required to complete each.

Medicare Benefits, Including Annual Wellness Exams & Care Planning - Guillermina Solis, Ph.D., APRN, FNP-C, GNP-C, FAANP and Brenda Hedrick Wautlet, M.S.W. Candidate, B.A. in Psychology

Guillermina Solis has been a nurse practitioner for over twenty years and is certified as a family and geriatric nurse practitioner. She is the Director of the Family Nurse Practitioner program at UTEP and has been teaching in the nursing graduate program for 10 years. She has been recognized as a national nurse leader and has conducted several research projects on health state of Hispanic population followed by publications in peer reviewed journals. She is Vice-Chair of the West Texas Alzheimer’s Association.

Brenda Wautlet is a support group facilitator, educator, advocate and board member for the Alzheimer’s Association West Texas Chapter.  She provided care to her mother Carrol, until she lost her fight with dementia in November 2021.  Brenda continues to be her mother’s biggest champion and is passionate about helping those living with dementia and their care partners. A diagnosis and disclosure of that diagnosis is essential in improving outcomes for the individual with dementia. 

Dr. Solis and Mrs. Wautlet will discuss the requirements for Medicare benefits available to seniors, including Annual Wellness Exams and the Care Planning Benefit.

Caregivers’ Self Care - Audrey Tolouian, Ed.D, RN, CNE, AHN-BC, FPCC

Dr. Audrey Tolouian has been a University of Texas at El Paso School of Nursing faculty member for fourteen years in both the RN to BSN and traditional programs.  She is a board-certified Holistic Nurse, Nurse Educator and a Planetree Fellow.

Dr. Tolouian will explore stress management techniques for self-care.  Discover what it means to be in a state of mindfulness and how you can apply this to daily living as a caregiver.
