The Alzheimer’s Association Rita Hayworth Gala, themed “So Near & Yet So Far,” took place on Tuesday, October 27, 2009 and raised nearly $2 million to fight Alzheimer’s disease. Guests enjoyed one of the most glamorous and highly anticipated evenings of the season in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf=Astoria Hotel. An estimated 600 guests attended including General Chair Princess Yasmin Aga Khan, Bryant and Hilary Gumbel, Regis and Joy Philbin, David Hyde Pierce and Brian Hargrove, Brooke Shields, Nina Garcia and David Conrad, Dan Ackroyd, Roger Waters, Ann Hearst, John McEnroe and Patty Smyth, Nikki Haskell, Eric Ripert, Buzz Aldrin, Jim Nantz, Art Garfunkel and Harvey Keitel. The evening began with a surprise performance of “Wish You Were Here” by Roger Waters from the rock band Pink Floyd followed by a live performance by The Pointer Sisters and The Stingers driving the crowd to their feet.
The evening honored individuals who combat Alzheimer’s disease through their fundraising, care and volunteer efforts. For their outstanding contribution to the field of Alzheimer’s Muffie Potter Aston received the Rita Hayworth Award, Lonnie Wollin, Esq. received the Lifetime Achievement Award and John, Margo, Andrea and John Jr. Catsimatidis received the Family Philanthropy Award.
Since its inception, the New York Rita Hayworth Gala has raised more than $30 million for the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association. We hope to see you next year as we carry on the New York Rita Hayworth Gala tradition!
