NARFE
As an official National Team for the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's®, NARFE's goal is to raise $50,000 across all regions. We are so appreciative of all those NARFE members who have already encouraged friends and family to join a Walk team. If you haven't started or joined a team yet, we hope this month's newsletter will inspire you to take part in this important NARFE event.
Congratulations to the Walk hoodie raffle winner, NARFE 91 Captain Joel Menking!
But the winning is far from over. Register your NARFE team today to vie for the honor of claiming our first official traveling trophy. The top NARFE Walk fundraising team will claim this special trophy (and bragging rights) for an entire year. Here are the top five teams to date:
  1. Team Hope - $6,000 (Western MD)
  2. NARFE Coastal Chapter 1690 - $2,616.32 (Rehoboth Beach, DE)
  3. NARFE 97 - $2,545 (Lexington, KY)
  4. Natl Active & Retired Federal Employees 672 - $2,265 (New Braunfels, TX)
  5. NARFE 1236 - $1,655 (Eastern Panhandle)
Please visit the NARFE National Team Page and be sure your team is one of the 62 teams registered. If they are not listed on the page and your team participated in a local Walk, please contact Jeff Kaplan at jkaplan@alz.org and we will be sure your team is counted.

High blood pressure may increase dementia risk
High blood pressure, particularly in middle age, may increase the risk of developing dementia, according to a new scientific statement from the American Heart Association. Experts say, however, that whether controlling high blood pressure reduces the odds of developing dementia has yet to be scientifically proven. Research has shown that there are lifestyle habits you can adopt, such as the management of heart health risk factors, to maintain or potentially improve your health as you age. Read more.

Alzheimer's disease makes the Top 10 list of presidential debate questions
With more than 35,000 votes cast, a question about Alzheimer's disease submitted through the Open Debate Coalition made the Top 10 list of potential questions to be asked during the Oct. 9 presidential debate. Even though the moderators didn't use the question, both campaigns have seen the leadership role the Alzheimer's Association plays in this cause. Thank you to everyone who voted as a way to take another step in advancing the cause.
