NARFE November

November is National Family Caregivers Month, a time for us to honor the selflessness of the more than 11 million Americans who provide care for those living with dementia. While caregivers are heroes at the heart of the Alzheimer's journey, even heroes can't do it alone. Whether it's providing daily caregiving, participating in decision making or caring about a person with the disease, the Alzheimer's Association® provides resources to help, like our 24/7 Helpline at 800.272.3900 and caregiving resources at alz.org/care. Your dedication helps provide support and essential resources like these, and we are incredibly grateful for our NARFE partners. Thank you for your ongoing commitment in the fight to end Alzheimer's!

Study is 'the ultimate test' of beta-amyloid hypothesis
Researchers are launching the DIAN-TU Primary Prevention Trial, a study designed to test whether stopping the buildup of a sticky substance in the brain called beta-amyloid will prevent Alzheimer's disease. The trial, which is funded by the Alzheimer's Association, the National Institute on Aging, GHR Foundation, Edward Jones and others, will give a treatment to people as young as 18 who have a rare gene mutation that causes Alzheimer's. Contracting COVID-19 may increase Alzheimer's risk
COVID-19 infection may increase the risk of developing Alzheimer's for older adults, results of a new, large-scale study suggest. Researchers said people 65 and older who contracted COVID-19 were nearly 70% more likely to be diagnosed with Alzheimer's within a year of their infection. Experts caution that if you've had COVID-19, it doesn't mean you're going to develop dementia, but talk to your doctor if your long-term symptoms include cognitive difficulties. Learn more.

Daily multivitamin supplements may benefit cognition
A study published in Alzheimer's & Dementia®: The Journal of the Alzheimer's Association found that taking a daily multivitamin-mineral supplement for three years significantly reduced cognitive aging in older adults. While the results are encouraging, widespread use of a multivitamin supplement to reduce the risk of cognitive decline is not yet recommended. Learn more.

Resources may be available to help pay for Alzheimer's care
