The newly released 2010 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures details the escalation of Alzheimer’s, the 7th leading cause of death in the nation and the fifth leading cause of death for those age 65 and older and offers statistics that clearly convey the burden of this disease on individuals, families, local and state government, and the nation’s health care system.
There are 5.3 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease 294,000 in the Delaware Valley area alone. The growing prevalence and escalating impact of this disease should not be underestimated. Now is the time to address the ways to tame the threat of one of the most significant public health crisis facing the nation.
This year’s report also examines how conditions, which occur more frequently in the African-American and Hispanic communities, may also increase risk for Alzheimer’s and dementia among these groups compared to whites.
