Experts gather to explore opportunities to improve research and practice in Hispanic and Latino populations

CHICAGO and SAN DIEGO, April 4, 2024 — The Latinos & Alzheimer’s Symposium, now in its fourth year, brings together researchers, clinicians and dementia care professionals April 4-5, 2024, in San Diego and online. More than 400 participants will explore and create opportunities to improve Alzheimer’s research and practice in Hispanic and Latino populations by examining issues including: underrepresentation in clinical trials, cultural and linguistic barriers to care and the impact of biomarkers on treatment options.

The Latinos & Alzheimer’s Symposium will cover culture, bilingualism and cognition; novel approaches to improve caregiving and caregiver support; recruitment of Latino participants to research and clinical trials; biomarkers in Latino populations; and access to newly approved therapies.

“U.S.-based Hispanic/Latino populations face a high risk of developing dementia. Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures reports they are 1.5 times more likely than non-Hispanic White people to develop Alzheimer’s and other dementias,” said Maria C. Carrillo, Ph.D., Alzheimer’s Association chief science officer and medical affairs lead. “It’s critical that we come together as a research and practice community to advance research to improve early diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s, and access to high quality and culturally-informed care among Latino and Hispanic communities.”

The Symposium program highlights the latest research, while also providing opportunities for participants to network. The Symposium will include a community event in collaboration with the Alzheimer’s Association San Diego Chapter.

“This Symposium presents the ultimate occasion for early career researchers, in particular, to engage with and join the community of clinicians, care professionals and scientists working to advance dementia science and care in Hispanic/Latino populations,” Carrillo said.

The Alzheimer’s Association offers multiple events throughout the year for the scientific community to exchange and learn about Alzheimer’s and dementia research, including the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference® (AAIC®), the largest and most influential meeting in Alzheimer's and dementia science.
