Honoring the first Michigan Chapter Alzheimer’s Champion Supporter

Young Family recognized at the 28th annual David E. Rutledge Golf Outing

At the 28th annual David E. Rutledge Charity Golf Outing on July 14, the Bill Young Family was honored as the inaugural recipients of the Alzheimer’s Association Michigan Chapter Champion Supporter. This award recognizes those who play a significant role in the outing’s continuation and growth.

Young is President and CEO of Absopure Water Company. Absopure has served as the presenting sponsor for the Rutledge Golf Outing for many years, but the partnership between Rutledge and Young began before the golf outing. In the early 1980s, David Rutledge, then supervisor of Superior Township, first met Bill Young when Young purchased a farm in the township and began restoring its historic farmhouse and barn. Their shared passion for land conservation and historical preservation sparked a friendship and partnership for good in their community.

“This is a family that has achieved business success but has not lost the common touch,” said Rutledge. “Their philanthropy extends to many areas. Friendships and fellowships are important to me, and I will forever cherish the friendship that Bill Young and I share.”

Rutledge started the charity golf outing in 1997 in memory of his mother, who had passed away from Alzheimer’s. The event raised $12,500 in its first year, but growth was limited with only a few sponsors. That changed in 2002, when Rutledge approached Young for help. Moved by the cause and his own personal connection - Bill’s father had Alzheimer’s - Young and Absopure stepped up as the event’s presenting sponsor, a role they have held for over two decades.

Thanks to the support of the Young Family and Absopure, the outing has become a cornerstone event for the Michigan Chapter. This year, more than 90 golfers joined us at Eagle Crest Golf Club in Ypsilanti for a day on the green to support care, research and programs for local families affected by Alzheimer’s. The outing raised over $70,000 in funds to support the Alzheimer’s Association.

To commemorate the outing’s 28th anniversary, the planning committee introduced the Champion Supporter recognition, a new honor that will be presented annually to those who have played a significant role in the success of the outing and its efforts to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. The Young Family was the unanimous choice for the inaugural award.

“I want to thank you all very much,” said Bill Young as he accepted the award at the outing. “This is a very important organization, and I want to thank everybody here today for being part of the solution.”
