Initial pilot cities for the partnership include Atlanta; Chicago; Cleveland; Columbia, South Carolina; Detroit; East St. Louis, Illinois; Memphis, Tennessee; Miami; Milwaukee; and New Orleans.
“The Alzheimer’s Association is proud to partner with Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. to pursue health equity related to Alzheimer’s and other dementia,” said Dr. Carl V. Hill, Ph.D., MPH, chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer, Alzheimer’s Association. “Members of Kappa Alpha Psi are trusted voices in communities nationwide. Together, we can reach more families with critical information, resources, and support.”
The new partnership aims to elevate awareness of Alzheimer’s and other dementias, which disproportionately affect Black/African American individuals. In fact, Black/African Americans are nearly twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. Through active engagement with local chapters, the initiative will provide culturally relevant education and connect families to vital resources offered by the Alzheimer’s Association.
“Kappa Alpha Psi and its members are committed to empowering our communities through education, advocacy and service,” said Antonio Martez, International Vice Chairman, Health and Wellness of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. “Partnering with the Alzheimer’s Association allows us to address a critical health issue affecting Black families nationwide. Together, we’re committed to breaking down barriers to care and ensuring that no family faces Alzheimer’s or dementia alone.”
Founded in 1911, Kappa Alpha Psi is the second-oldest historically Black Greek-letter fraternity and has a long-standing legacy of community service and health advocacy. The fraternity’s recent health campaigns have focused on colon cancer, cardiovascular disease, mental health, and nutrition in the Black/African American community.
As part of the collaboration, Kappa Alpha Psi representatives in pilot cities will be trained as Health Equity Awareness Champions, empowering them to educate and advocate for dementia care within their communities. Chapters will also receive quarterly updates on the latest Alzheimer’s and dementia research, along with information on Alzheimer’s Association programs and initiatives, including Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
“This partnership represents a powerful opportunity to confront the longstanding health disparities that have impacted Black communities — especially when it comes to Alzheimer’s and other dementias,” said Dr. Hill. “By joining forces with Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., we can bring greater awareness, education and support to families navigating this devastating disease. Together, we can help change the trajectory of Alzheimer’s and other dementias in our communities.”
