Donate NowAlzheimer's Association Part the Cloud Grants $7 Million to Accelerate Visionary Treatment Candidates into Clinical Trials
The latest round of funding reflects Part the Cloud's strategy that no single treatment approach will be enough to defeat Alzheimer's. This infusion of funds will enable testing of a wide range of strategies — from drug combination approaches, to a repurposed diuretic (drugs that help your body get rid of extra water and salt), to the program's first artificial intelligence (AI)-designed antibody therapy.
The newest Part the Cloud Translational Research for Alzheimer’s Disease Program awardees are:
Combination Therapies Program
- Silvia Fossati, Ph.D., Temple University, Philadelphia, PA: Phase 1/2 Trial of Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors Plus Anti-Amyloid Therapy. $1,999,886.
- Suzanne Craft, Ph.D., Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC: Restoring Vascular and Insulin Function to Augment Anti-Amyloid Therapy. $1,999,307.
- Note: Craft's new award builds directly on her previous Part the Cloud-funded work which tested repurposed type 2 diabetes drugs.
- Walter Swardfager, Ph.D., Sunnybrook Research Institute, Canada: Phase 1b Proof-of-Mechanism Trial of EC5026 in Biomarker-Confirmed Early Alzheimer's Disease. $1,000,000.
- Kyan Younes, M.D., Stanford University, Stanford, CA: Phase IIa Randomized Controlled Trial of Bumetanide in Alzheimer's Disease. $1,000,000.
- Binita Rajbanshi, Ph.D., Nanil Therapeutics, Canada: AI-Designed Nanobody Therapeutics for Alzheimer's Disease. $1,000,000.
Part the Cloud was founded in 2012 by philanthropist Michaela "Mikey" Hoag, who lost both of her parents to Alzheimer's disease. The innovative program is specifically designed to provide strategic funding to advance high-risk, high-reward investigational Alzheimer’s therapies into clinical trials.
"Alzheimer's is too complex for one answer, so we invest in big ideas that have the best chance of slowing, stopping and ultimately curing Alzheimer’s disease," said Hoag. "These projects reflect Part the Cloud's mission to support and speed up outside-the-box science instead of waiting for someone else to make the first move."
To date, Part the Cloud has funded 88 clinical trials of innovative potential treatments across the globe. Part the Cloud grant recipients have gone on to receive more than $3 billion in follow-on funding from the federal government, venture capital firms and other funding sources.
Part the Cloud’s latest initiative is to raise $30 million for the Challenge to Fast-Track Alzheimer's Breakthroughs. Funds will support three critical priorities in Alzheimer’s research:
- Advancing combination therapies that target the disease from multiple angles.
- Accelerating AI-powered drug discovery and development to ensure promising candidates reach clinical trials.
- Strengthening Part the Cloud’s core translational program to move breakthroughs from the lab to patients faster.
