Walter Burkhartsmeier Bikes 207 Miles, Raises $5,300 for Alzheimer’s Care and Research

We’re proud to spotlight Walter Burkhartsmeier, board member of the Alzheimer’s Association Oregon & SW Washington Chapter and Operations Director at CareOregon, who completed the Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic—a 207-mile cycling challenge through the Pacific Northwest.

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Alzheimer’s Association Oregon & SW Washington Chapter is proud to recognize Walter Burkhartsmeier, a dedicated member of our leadership board member and Vice President of Operations at CareOregon, for completing the Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic (STP), a 207-mile cycling challenge through the heart of the Pacific Northwest.

Walter joined thousands of riders in this iconic double-century ride, which stretches from Seattle, Washington to Portland, Oregon, traversing both urban and rural landscapes.

In an incredible display of community leadership, Walter dedicated his ride to fundraising for the Alzheimer's Association. He raised $5,300 to support Alzheimer’s care, support services, and groundbreaking research through the Alzheimer’s Association. These funds help fuel critical programs that benefit families across Oregon and Washington, where more than 200,000 people are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and an estimated 400,000 unpaid caregivers provide essential support to loved ones.

His ride also shines a light on the importance of physical activity in brain health. The U.S. POINTER study, a national research initiative led by the Alzheimer’s Association, recently revealed that lifestyle interventions—such as regular exercise, healthy eating, and cognitive engagement—can significantly improve brain function in older adults at risk for cognitive decline.

As Oregon’s aging population continues to grow, Walter’s commitment to both community wellness and Alzheimer’s advocacy is a powerful example of leadership in action. His efforts help advance the fight against Alzheimer’s and promote healthier futures for all.

👏 Thank you, Walter, for going the distance—for Alzheimer’s families, for research, and for hope. Fundraising for The Longest Day continues through August 31, 2025. Getting started is easy and you can do what you love to end Alzheimer's.
