PORTLAND, Ore. - The Alzheimer’s Association Oregon & SW Washington Chapter is proud to welcome Mike Harryman as the new president of our leadership board of directors. With decades of experience in emergency management, public health, and statewide resilience planning, Mike brings a wealth of expertise and a deep commitment to public service that will elevate our mission to end Alzheimer’s and all other dementia.
Mike currently serves as the Resilience Manager for the Office of Resilience and Emergency Management (OREM) at the Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS). In this role, he leads Continuity of Operations and Continuity of Government planning and supports the activation of the Disaster Cabinet for ODHS, ensuring Oregon’s most vulnerable populations are protected in times of crisis.
Mike’s career is defined by visionary leadership and a passion for building resilient communities. As Oregon’s first State Resilience Officer, appointed in 2016, he spearheaded efforts to prepare the state for the next Cascadia Earthquake and Tsunami. His tenure included the creation of a white paper for Governor Kate Brown outlining key resiliency priorities, the formation of a 33-member interagency council to ensure government continuity, and the development of the first-ever Executive Branch Continuity of Government guidance.
Prior to his work in resilience, Mike led emergency operations at the Oregon Health Authority, where he directed the state’s Emergency Support Function-8 for Public Health and Medical Services. His leadership during public health emergencies helped shape Oregon’s preparedness and response capabilities.
Mike is deeply engaged in community service. He currently serves as President of the Oregon Emergency Management Association, where he holds a Lifetime Membership, and is the Finance Officer for American Legion Post 180 in Milwaukie, Oregon.
A veteran of the 1991 Gulf War, Mike retired from the U.S. Army in 1999 after a distinguished 22-year career, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. He holds a master’s degree in Disaster and Emergency Management from American Military University, a B.S. in Business Management from the University of Phoenix, and is a graduate of the Naval Postgraduate School’s Executive Leader’s Program.
Mike’s extensive state connections, strategic insight, and unwavering dedication to service will be instrumental in amplifying the Alzheimer’s Association’s focus on care, support, and research. We are honored to have him join our leadership board and look forward to the impact he will make in the lives of families facing Alzheimer’s and other dementias across Oregon and Southwest Washington.
