    Alzheimer's strikes 3 times, inspiring call for action

    Three times Deena Taylor Rolls of Corrales has seen the toll that Alzheimer's disease will take on a family. Her father passed in his 80s. Her sister was diagnosed in her early 50s before passing at just 57. Today, her aunt is living with the diagnosis. Rolls has provided care for them all, and now she’s asking the state legislature to invest in a trial Dementia Care Specialist program to help all New Mexicans cope with this tragic disease.

    Researchers at the University of New Mexico have received a $1 million Alzheimer’s Association Part the Cloud grant to further their work on a promising approach to the disease: targeting tau tangles in the brain utilizing medications that have already been approved by the FDA for treating other medical conditions.
