2020 Pilot Awards for Global Brain Health Leaders (GBHI)

For You,

Rowena Richie, MFA
Dancers' Group
San Francisco, CA - United States

Past studies suggest that dementia can present several challenges for caregivers, often impacting their physical and emotional health. Consequently, this could impact the quality of caregiving. Rowena Richie’s study is aimed at adapting a customized creative practice called “For you,” to ease the burden on caregivers by engaging those living with dementia. The researchers will recruit 12 pairs of individuals with dementia and their caregivers (called “dyads”) for the study and document their stories. Based on the participant anecdotes, Richie’s creative team will produce and document the process of creating a performance for the participants. Richie and colleagues will evaluate the impact of the performance on the dyads via qualitative and quantitative measures. If successful, the study could help reduce caregiver stress, enable better engagement of the caregivers with their loved ones and could be scaled to a larger population of individuals with dementia and their caregivers.
