Informal Caregivers: Mixed Methods Approach to Study of Burden Experiences

Miriam Galvin, Ph.D.
Trinity College
Dublin, Ireland

Studies suggest that dementia can present several challenges for caregivers, often impacting their physical and emotional health. Consequently, this could impact the quality of caregiving. Dr. Miriam Galvin will explore challenges associated with informal (meaning care being provided by someone who is not a trained professional) caregiving in brain diseases by engaging a population of caregivers for someone with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) as a model. Building on Dr. Galvin’s past work with an Irish population study, Galvin and team will analyze a population of caregivers in three European countries (Ireland, England and the Netherlands). The researchers will assess the caregiver’s perception of challenges experienced, as a result of providing care to people with ALS. This study will test the feasibility of using an existing Irish caregiver survey protocol in a broader European setting. If successful, the study results could be also broadly scaled to other countries across the globe to develop policy strategies to better support caregivers and those they are providing care
