Exposure to Air Pollution and Dementia: A Clinicopathologic Study

Laís Fajersztajn, Ph.D.
Universidade de São Paulo
São Paulo, Brazil

Past studies have shown that environmental factors such as high levels of outdoor air pollution may be associated with cognitive decline. However, the biological mechanisms by which air pollution may contribute to cognitive decline is not yet clear. Dr. Lais Fajersztajn will use brain tissue from individuals in Sao Paulo, Brazil to investigate whether a lifetime exposure to urban air pollution could be associated with cognitive decline and brain changes observed in dementia. The study results could promote awareness of the impact air pollution may have on the brain and promote policies that would address this growing issue.
