Rhythm for Life - a training for creative musical interaction in dementia

Jane Bentley, Ph.D.
ROAR Connections for Life
Paisley, United Kingdom

Researchers are trying to develop novel methods for caregiving that improve quality of life for those living with Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. Past studies have shown that musical intervention may decrease stress and anxiety in individuals with dementia. Dr. Jane Bentley’s project will create a 2-day training program by adapting an existing drumming and health protocol to engage individuals with dementia. Dr. Bentley will test the new drumming protocol by conducting 8 music sessions. The protocol will be developed with a music industry partner to facilitate continued hosting of the music session on their website and to promote future training courses. The study participants will consist of caregivers who wish to bring more participative musical activity into their environments and music professionals who wish to work with people with dementia. Dr. Bentley will evaluate the impact of the music intervention on the participants stress, anxiety and overall quality of life. If successful, the study may improve the quality and accessibility of musical activity in dementia care.
