Evaluating the Effectiveness of Informational Supports for People with TBI

Lingani Mbakile-Mahlanza, D.Psyc.
University of Botswana
Gaborone, Botswana

Past studies have suggested an association between the occurrence of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and cognitive decline. This could impact the quality of life of individuals with TBI and their family members. In nations such as Botswana, a country in Southern Africa, these effects are compounded by a lack of awareness and resources to tackle TBI. Dr. Mbakile-Mahlanza’s study aims to address this need by developing support mechanisms for individuals with TBI and their caregivers. Researchers will recruit study participants from two hospitals in Botswana. Participants will include individuals who have sustained moderate to severe TBI and their caregivers. The researchers will provide caregivers with coping strategies and educational information booklets about TBI. The researchers will compare their participant group with another group which receives usual care to assess the impact of their support and education intervention. Furthermore, Dr. Mbakile-Mahlanza and colleagues will perform follow up assessments to evaluate the quality of life in their study participants. If successful, the study could be scaled throughout the country and possibly to other nations worldwide.
