A Photographic Perspective on Aging in Peru

Alex Kornhuber, BFA
Asociacion Peruana de Neurociencias ONG para la Salud - IPN
Lima, Peru

Alex Kornhuber will use film and photography to document the lives of elder Peruvians who reside in diverse regions of the country- the coast (Mancora), the mountains (Andes) and the jungle (Amazon) as well the capital city of Lima. Kornhuber will embed within both the urban and rural community settings as he believes that immersing in the communities will add a unique breadth to his work and showcase the diversity of the aging experience of older Peruvians. In his study, Kornhuber will focus on individuals who are cognitively unimpaired as well as those that have mild cognitive impairment (a condition with subtle memory loss that may precede dementia, including Alzheimer’s dementia) and dementia. If successful, the study may highlight key social determinants of health by exploring living conditions within each community and may help in understanding (and communicating that understanding) regarding how these social determinants may impact the lives of older adults.
