Background

According to the Alzheimer’s Association 2023 Facts and Figures Report, there are an estimated 6.7 million individuals in the United States who are living with Alzheimer’s, making Alzheimer’s awareness a public health priority. This involves increasing awareness and understanding of overall brain health and aging, as well as reducing the stigma surrounding the disease. Studies have shown that different forms of media including art, film, and news such as radio or podcast shows, can be useful tools for Alzheimer’s awareness and education. However, most media focuses on the negative aspects of the disease and the challenges that individuals living with Alzheimer’s and their care partners face. Dr. Jake Broder and colleagues propose a pilot project that will create a podcast focused on raising awareness and inspiring hope for those living with Alzheimer’s.

Research Plan

For their podcast, Dr. Broder and the team will create an episode that explores early onset Alzheimer’s disease (EOAD), a specific form of Alzheimer’s that affects individuals younger than age 65, in Columbia. The episode will also explore some of the genetic factors associated with EOAD and how the progression of the disease can be described by music. The team will bring together researchers, stakeholders, and musicians to create and record the podcast episode which will be distributed through several podcast streaming services. This will lay the foundation for Dr. Broder and the team to create and record an additional 7 podcast episodes spanning various Alzheimer’s topics.

Impact

If successful, the podcast created during the study will help create social change and reduce the stigma surrounding Alzheimer’s. It could also promote awareness and inspire hope for the Alzheimer’s community.
