Develop a culturally valid quality of life measure for Vietnam

How can we assess the quality of life of individuals living with dementia in Vietnam?

Kim-Huong Nguyen, Ph.D.

Background

Individuals with Alzheimer’s and other dementia may experience mood and behavioral changes, including depression, stress, anxiety, and loneliness. Identifying ways to cope with these changes to improve the quality of life for those living with dementia is a key goal of dementia research. However, standardized questionnaires and other tools to assess the quality of life for individuals with dementia often do not consider the cultural and language needs of underrepresented populations. Dr. Kim-Huong Nguyen and colleagues propose a pilot study that will translate commonly used quality-of-life questionnaires into Vietnamese with the aim of creating a culturally appropriate and validated method for assessing the quality of life in individuals with dementia in Vietnam.

Research Plan

Dr. Nguyen and colleagues plan to translate several commonly used questionnaires for measuring the quality of life in individuals with dementia into Vietnamese and culturally modify the assessments as needed. They will then interview focus groups of individuals with dementia and the care partners to ensure that the new assessments cover aspects of life that are unique to Vietnamese culture.

Impact

This study could provide valuable insights into how well the quality of life needs for individuals living with dementia in Vietnam are being assessed. It may also develop a novel, more culturally appropriate assessment for older individuals with dementia in Vietnam.
