The AlzWell Social Club is held virtually from Noon to 3:30 p.m. on selected Saturdays. It includes various relaxation and creative activities as well as a support group for caregivers and people with early and middle-stage dementia.
Memory-impaired individuals and their families are welcome to attend this group. From 1-1:30, participants engage in open discussion to get caught up with each other. This is followed by various activities that differ depending on the session, including sensory stimulation exercises designed to engage the caregiver and the person with dementia, such as a scented hand lotion massage with guided imagery, which can help bring up lost language and memories.
Other activities include relaxation techniques and deep breathing exercises to help those with early- or moderate-stage dementia manage their anxiety. Participants may do some mindfulness practices, such as counting, deep breathing or focusing techniques. They are also encouraged to reminisce and speak about their memories.
At 12:30 p.m., the program continues with dance therapy and movement to music followed by the support group session at 2 p.m.
This starts with a quick check-in and discussion and a progressive muscle relaxation or a five-minute stretching exercise followed by an art therapy experiential — creative writing, dialog and deep breathing exercises.
Depending on the topic of the day, this could be followed by a discussion about any challenges or successes.
The program ends with a positive group affirmation.
