Jorge Mario Leon Salas, M.D.
Centro de Educacion y Nutricion y Centros Infantiles de Nutricion y Atencion Integral del Ministerio de Salud de Costa Rica
San Jose, Costa Rica

Dr. Jorge Mario Leon Salas will explore an intergenerational Montessori-based approach to promote successful aging. Previous studies have shown that intergenerational programs and Montessori intervention benefit older adults with dementia. However, whether these programs could prevent or delay cognitive decline in older adults is still unclear. Dr. Salas will create an Intergenerational Senior Montessori (ISM) in a community setting in Costa Rica. The researchers will train cognitively unimpaired older adults in order to learn to become mentors and design intergenerational activities such as cognition, exercise and sociability. The study will involve up to 15 older adults and corresponding number of preschoolers, who will participate in 12 sessions. The researchers will use quantitative data, interviews and clinical measures to evaluate health outcomes in the older adult participants. If successful, this program could be used to as an approach to promote healthy aging.
