Developing tool to assess needs of dementia carers for economic evaluation

Irina Kinchin, Ph.D.
University of Technology Sydney
Sydney, Australia

Dr. Irina Kinchin’s project will develop a tool to holistically assess impacts on informal caregivers of people living with dementia. The goal of the project is to critically examine and define the self-reported needs of caregivers of older adults living with dementia. Based on the data gathered from the caregivers, Dr. Kinchin will develop a self-assessment tool. This tool will be subjected to economic evaluation to help with optimal allocation of resources for dementia care. Dr. Kinchin believes that this could be especially useful in circumstances such as the COVID-19 pandemic, which has particularly impacted community-based caregivers due to the closure of care facilities and the resulting social isolation, among others. In the long term, the study results could contribute to policy and funding decisions related to caregivers of individuals with dementia.
