Carer Portal: "Portal del cuidador"

Silvia Rodrigo-Herrero, M.D., MSc
Juan Ramon Jimenez University Hospital
Huelva, Spain

According to the Alzheimer’s Disease International, the total estimated worldwide cost of dementia is now above US $1 trillion. These costs could have a significant impact on caregivers' economy and wellbeing. Past studies have shown that caregiver support programs have beneficial impacts on caregivers’ health. Dr. Silvia Rodrigo-Herrero will develop a Carer portal called “Portal del Cuidador” designed to improve caregiver wellbeing. Participants in this project will be caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease. This virtual portal will offer diverse information and guidance regarding dementia and related local services, mindfulness videos, “brain training” activities to do at home, expert advice on mood disorders as well as contact information of multidisciplinary teams for emergencies and others. Dr. Rodrigo-Herrero will collect information on burden, anxiety, depression, sleep, and wellbeing from the participants at the beginning and after 6 months and 12 months of this project. Dr. Rodrigo-Herrero will use participant feedback to personalize the portal and improve the portal efficiency. Ultimately, Dr. Rodrigo-Herrero will compare participant wellbeing after using the portal compared with usual care. With data collected from this project, Dr. Rodrigo-Herrero aims to expand this study to implement a national caregiver strategy in Spain. If successful, the study results may help shape recommendations that guide clinical practices, policies, and future research to enhance caregiver support.
