Basic literacy, memory and brain connectivity

Elisa de Paula França Resende, MD
Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais - Faculdade de Medicina
Belo Horizonte, Brazil

Dr. Resende’s project explores the effects of basic literacy acquired later in life on improving brain connectivity and memory. Preliminary results from Dr. Resende’s study show that education modulates the relationship between memory and a region of the brain. However, this aspect has been understudied in a low educational settings among elderly populations in low-income countries. Dr. Resende proposes to analyze the effects of how basic literacy acquired later in life affects memory performances. Dr. Resende’s goal is to provide scientific evidence that it is never too late to engage in intellectually stimulating activities and promote brain health in vulnerable populations.
