While Alzheimer’s disease was first diagnosed 115 years ago, it wasn’t until 2021 that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first medication designed to address the underlying biology of Alzheimer’s. That medication, aducanumab, will be the subject of a free webinar, New Advances in Alzheimer’s Treatments, offered in September by the Alzheimer’s Association.

Aducanumab (brand name: Aduhelm) is an amyloid beta-directed monoclonal antibody that targets amyloid beta in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s to reduce its buildup. This free education live webinar: New Advances in Alzheimer’s Treatments, will provide an overview of how aducanumab works, who are the intended candidates to receive the treatment, availability, and more.

Scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 28, from noon to 1 p.m., New Advances in Alzheimer’s Treatments is one in a series of live webinars that will be offered at no charge during the month of September. The full schedule for the month includes:
  • The 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease (Learn about the 10 common warning signs, what to watch for in yourself and others, typical age-related changes, the benefits of a diagnosis, early detection and more.) – 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15; and 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21.
    • 10 Senales de Advertencia de la Enfermedad de Alzheimer (en Espanol) – 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9.
  • Legal and Financial Planning for Alzheimer’s (An interactive program where you’ll learn about important legal and financial issues to consider, how to put plans in place, and how to access legal and financial resources near you.) – 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15.
  • Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia (Learn about the impact of Alzheimer’s, the differences between Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, risk factors, current research, treatments to address some symptoms and more.) – 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21.
  • Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body: Tips from the Latest Research (We’ve always known that the health of the brain and body are linked, but now science is able to provide insights into how we can optimize our physical and cognitive health as we age. Learn about research in the areas of diet and nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity and social engagement, and use hands-on tools to help you incorporate these recommendations into a plan for healthy aging.) – 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23; and 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28.
  • New Advancements in Alzheimer’s Treatment (Learn about Aducanumab, a new advancement in Alzheimer's treatment. This program will provide an overview of how Aducanumab works, who are the intended candidates to receive the treatment, availability, and more.) – noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28.
  • Effective Communication Strategies (This workshop teaches caregivers to decode verbal and behavioral communication from someone with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Develop strategies for having meaningful connection with people in differing stages of dementia.) – 2 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30.
