Original watercolor paintings by artists from across Colorado living with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia will be featured at the May 20 Alzheimer’s Association Purple Gala event along with pairing works created by several dozen professional Colorado artists. Proceeds from the Gala support programs and services for families as well as research to find a cure for the 7th-leading cause of death.

Scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at the Pat Bowlen Fieldhouse at The Denver Broncos Training Center in Centennial, the Purple Gala will include live and silent auctions, fine dining and an entertaining program.

DSC_0296.jpgThe auctions will include artwork donated by prominent Colorado artists, such as John Fielder, Michelle Norcross, Madeline O’Connell, Margaretta Ceasar, Eric Matelski and more, as well as other items available for bidding, including vacation trips to Montana, South Africa and Tuscany.

Co-chairs for the event are Annabel Bowlen, daughter of the late Pat Bowlen, former owner of the Denver Broncos who, like his wife, Annabel, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Bowlen will be joined by former Denver TV news anchor Libby Weaver.

The original art drawn by the artists living with Alzheimer’s disease is created at Memories in the Making programs held at senior care locations around the state. Facilitated by the Alzheimer’s Association, Memories in the Making provides participants with an opportunity to express their thoughts and memories through art when they often are not able to do so verbally.

Proceeds from the event support the Alzheimer’s Association of Colorado, the leading source of information, programs and services for Coloradans living with dementia, their families and caregivers. The Alzheimer’s Association also is the world’s leading non-profit funder of Alzheimer’s research, with over $310 million active in 950 projects in 48 countries.

More than 6.7 million people across the United States, including 76,000 Coloradans, are living with Alzheimer’s disease, the only leading disease without a prevention or cure.
