About Dr. Lemuel and Mrs. Gloria Rogers

In 1968, Dr. Lemuel Rogers became one of the first black doctors to build and own a medical building in Rochester. In more than three decades as an obstetrician-gynecologist, he delivered more than 5,000 babies at Rochester’s Highland and Saint Mary’s hospitals. 

Dr. Rogers’ wife, Gloria, worked as a teacher and counselor for the Rochester City School District for 30 years. Mrs. Rogers was a member of the Delta Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

Later in life, Mrs. Rogers developed dementia and Dr. Rogers was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Dr. Rogers reached out to family friends Ralph and Mollie Richards to seek guidance and support from the Alzheimer’s Ministry at Mt. Olivet. After Dr. Rogers’ passing in 2015, the symposium was renamed to commemorate the Rogers family's contributions to health education in the Rochester black community.
