Anjanette Kichline, Founders Society member, has generously named the Alzheimer's Association as a beneficiary of her retirement plan.
My father, Gary, was the kind of guy who could walk into a room full of strangers and leave with new best friends for life! He was one of the most cheerful, good-natured and gentle people.
But when Dad was in his mid-50s, my family noticed him struggling. His work and handyman skills began to deteriorate, and he became depressed and withdrawn. This was not the man I knew. At age 58, Dad was diagnosed with younger-onset Alzheimer's disease, devastating our family.
My family attended an Alzheimer's Association-led information session to learn more about the disease and programs that might help us. Our family attended the meeting together. Afterward, I started a Walk to End Alzheimer's® team that continues today, almost 20 years later. As my dad's journey with the disease progressed, I benefited from the camaraderie, care and advice I received in an Association support group.
My experience with the Alzheimer's Association made me want to give back and honor my father and other family members who have struggled with this disease. I served as a board member of the Alzheimer's Association Delaware Valley Chapter from 2017 to 2024. I became involved in advocacy through the Alzheimer's Impact Movement (AIM), and I continue talking with lawmakers about my family's experience.
Giving back means so much to me, and when I began, I had no idea how much I would get in return. Since my father's diagnosis, I have cherished the community of close friends I met through the Association. I realized my family was not alone in our sadness and struggle. Standing beside them, I have tried to make a difference for other families facing the same challenges. I know my dad would be proud.
I decided to leave a gift to the Alzheimer's Association by naming it as a beneficiary of my retirement plan. My future gifts will support research because I don't want another person in my family or in other families to have to suffer from Alzheimer's disease. I'm so proud to honor my father and other family members who lost their fights to Alzheimer's in this way.
