A public health approach is necessary to lessen the burden and enhance the quality of life for people living with Alzheimer’s and dementia, caregivers, and their families.

    South Carolina Alzheimer's Disease Registry

Here in South Carolina, we are fortunate to have the nation’s most comprehensive statewide registry of residents diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. In partnership with the SC Alzheimer's Disease Registry, the Alzheimer's Association SC Chapter produces county factsheets each year to shed light on the impact of dementia on our local communities.

As of 2022, the most current year that complete data is available through the Registry, 125,538 South Carolinians were living with a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease or related dementias (ADRD).
Statewide, African Americans were an average of 34% more likely to have ADRD than their non-Hispanic white counterparts.

The SC Alzheimer's Disease Registry is maintained by the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina, with support from the SC Department of Health and Human Services and the SC Revenue and Fiscal Affairs Office. The county factsheets on this page represent the diagnosed prevalence of all dementias in South Carolina based on records available to the SC Alzheimer's Disease Registry. Individuals who have mild forms of the disease, but lack a diagnosis, do not appear in the Registry data. In fact, research suggests that the number of individuals with ADRD may be nearly 50% greater than the number with diagnosed ADRD.

While diagnosed prevalence data is not available for most states, the Alzheimer's Association offers information on the impact of Alzheimer's and caregiving in any state nationwide, including estimated prevalence at the state and county level. Learn more.
